The week ahead in Dixon. Every Sunday.

The fairgrounds are working two weekends in a row this month, and South First Street has the traffic to show for it. After that the calendar tips straight into costume season, which fills up faster than people expect. Worth a scroll past Thursday on this one.

From the Council

The Parks and Recreation Commission met Sept. 22 at City Hall. On the agenda: an update on the city's five-year plan for building and repairing public things, roads, parks and utilities included, covering 2026 through 2030. Commissioners were also set to hear verbal updates on park maintenance and improvements. The packet has what was scheduled, not what was decided.

The Dixon Unified school board held a special meeting Sept. 28. The one action item was a revised year-end financial report for 2025-26, with adjustments made after the original was approved. Agenda here.

One Local Thing

In October 1909 the Dixon Tribune had a local angle on a national story. On Wednesday, Oct. 27, Mrs. R.H. Van Deman, the wife of an Army captain, went up in Maryland as a passenger in the Wright aeroplane the government had just bought. She stayed aloft four minutes. The wire report called her the first woman to fly through the air of the western hemisphere.

"It was simply grand," she said when she came down. "Now I know why the birds sing."

The Tribune's interest was personal. She was the daughter of Mrs. Jessie Rice of Dixon and the granddaughter of former state senator H.E. McCune, "one of the oldest residents of Solano county." As the paper put it: "As Mrs. Van Deman is a Dixon girl everybody here has taken a deep interest in the report of her ride through the air."

From the Tribune's Brevities, compiled by Ardeth Sievers Reidel and kept by the Dixon Public Library.
